"Life changing!"

I picked up this book at the library when "Sugar Busters!" was not available. I enjoyed the technical discussions, and the idea of complex carbohydrates promoting hypoglycemia struck a chord in me--my doctors had me on a pretty high carb diet that really didn't help my symptoms. Since starting the 2-week Fat Flush in this book, I have lost 6 pounds in 4 days. This WORKS for me and I even cheated a little. Hunger isn't a big problem on this diet. The essential fatty acids--and avoiding the wrong fats--are a big key too. I recommend this highly! I will also buy a copy to keep for reference.

"Another gem from Jeremy Safron!"

Well, when you put it that way, fasting sounds downright elegant, doesn't it? After reading this book, you'll see that there's a whole lot more to it than just, well, starving yourself. Fasting is a gift you give yourself, and it can be spiritually and physically transforming. This book, in true Jeremy Safron style, covers the topic succinctly and beautifully, including absolutely everything you need to know to prepare for and perform a fast in 88 pages (another good stocking stuffer at about 6x8"!).

One of my favorite parts of the book is the Self-Empowerment Questionnaire at the end "designed to track and guage the process of healing," because that's really what fasting is all about - cleaning out the body and quieting the mind. This book covers every kind of fast you can imagine, from speech fasts (no talking) to sweet food fasts as well as traditional juice and water fasts. You'll learn about cleansing practices for all different organs and fasting assistants like pranayama, yoga, sweats, skin brushing, writing, castor packs - the list is too long for this review.

Suffice it to say that this book is all you need to get started on this time-honored cleansing ritual. As soon as I finish writing this review, I'm filling out the questionnaire and sending it in by email for advise on the type of fasting program and other practices that are right for me. And of course, I'll check with my doctor before getting started. Treat yourself: get this book - a true gift - and do the same for your health and well-being.--Melanie Wilson

"It can change your life if you're ready to change"

Beyond Pritikin is well written and educational, while not being preachy nor judgemental. It simply explains how to eliminate body damaging fats with life enhancing fats. The diet is easy to stay on, and the two week fat flush was simply amazing; although harder to adhere to over the 14 days. I would liked to have seen the authors elaborate just a little more on "why" these changes are beneficial. However, the book reads fast, is easy to understand and enlightens. Having personally done the programs contained within the book I can atest to it's success if followed properly. Not always easy in the two week fat flush, but the results could not be denied.

"Great research for a way too general diet"

I applaud Dr. Gittleman for her extensive research and painstaking explanations of the many elements and nuances of nutrition. It becomes obvious, even to the most ardent student of nutrition, that she knows what she's talking about. Her explanation of the role of essential fat is quite possibly the simplest and most complete that I have ever read, and I have read volumes regarding this.
My only critique would be that the diet does not take into consideration some very key factors, such as Lean body mass or basal metabolic rate of the dieter. A one-size-fits-all diet is not appropriate or effective for anyone. Consider the caloric needs of a 120 pound sedentary female vs. the caloric needs of a 210 pound male construction worker, and you begin to see my point.
In the Authors defence, I'm certain that she would agree. I'm also certain that it was never her intention for everyone to follow her portion guidlines to the letter.
I feel that overall this is a valuable book. I only suggest that care be taken when calculating the individuals need for macronutrients.
